Biography and Academic Interests
"I am passionate about helping students to make connections between the depths of our theological tradition and the depths of our life, faith and parish ministry."
Jason Fout joined the faculty of Bexley Hall in 2009. Originally from the Diocese of Chicago, after his ordination in 2001 he served as curate in a parish in the Diocese of Western Michigan for four years. In this capacity, alongside preaching and presiding regularly, he focused on teaching, small groups ministry, welcoming newcomers and working with families with younger children. He also served on the diocese’s Commission on Ministry and worked with the General Board of Examining Chaplains in assessing the GOEs.
Fr. Fout has written his doctoral dissertation on the glory of God and its relation to human agency at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Professor David F. Ford and the late Professor Daniel W. Hardy. His research interests include the thought of Rowan Williams, Paul Ricoeur, Karl Barth and Hans Urs von Balthasar, as well as the history of Anglican theology and constructive theology in the areas of Trinitarian theology, Christology and theological anthropology. In addition, he is quite interested in the conversations which might take place at the intersections of theology and other disciplines, particularly aesthetics, literature, economics and urbanism.
He is an active member of several scholarly societies, including the American Academy of Religion, Society of Anglican and Lutheran Theologians and the Society for the Study of Theology. He has presented scholarly papers on topics such as the glory of God, theological aesthetics, and honor and the gift in St. Paul, in venues such as the Society for the Study of Theology, the Institute for Theology, Imagination and the Arts, and the University of Cambridge Senior Systematic Theology Seminar. He has written well over 100 book reviews which have appeared in scholarly journals as well as popular magazines, in addition to authoring several chapters in edited multi-author collections in both history and theology.
In addition to his theological and priestly activities, Fr. Fout is an unreconstructed foodie and loves to cook for his family and friends whenever he can. He enjoys traveling, particularly in Europe. He also reads widely, and particularly enjoys the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins and the prose of John Updike and P.G. Wodehouse. After having lived on two continents, he is now a long-suffering fan of both Chicago Cubs baseball and English test cricket.
